The Christmas Tale of Peter Rabbit

Updated on July 24, 2014

The Christmas Tale of Peter Rabbit by Emma Thompson

Peter Rabbit, created by Beatrix Potter, lives on in in this charming, brand new story book for children, The Christmas Tale of Peter Rabbit. It is not written by Beatrix Potter though, but by the famous Oscar winning actress and screen writer, Emma Thompson. Thompson was specially chosen to write the new tales by the publishers of the Peter Rabbit stories, Frederick Warne, and by Peter Rabbit himself!

This latest Peter Rabbit book is quite a dark Christmas story about a Turkey called William. Now William is a rather vain and 'self-absorbed' bird who, together with Peter and Benjamin, was looking forward to Christmas until it became clear that his role in the festivities was that of the main course of Mr McGregor's Christmas dinner. Don't worry though, Peter and Benjamin come to the rescue.

Did you know that William really existed? Emma Thompson went to visit Beatrix Potter's farms in the Lake District and it was at Yew Tree farm that she met a fascinating turkey who really was called William; it was he who became the model for her story.

Emma Thompson describes in a BBC Radio 4 interview how the writing of Beatrix Potter influenced her as a child and, admitting that despite the rather serious nature of her Christmas story she felt confident that children would enjoy it. Like Potter, Thompson feels that children should not be patronised or 'talked down to'. (Beatrix Potter certainly didn't hide the darker side of life from children or talk down to them.)

Emma Thompson assures us that this book will thrill the kids, telling us that it's "full of daring-do" and the illustrations by Eleanor Taylor are superb and do Beatrix Potter full justice. I can't wait to read it!

Not yet published you can pre-order this Christmas book for children now and make Christmas truly magical.

Emma Thompson Talks About The Further Tale of Peter Rabbit

The Author, Emma Thompson, talks about her first Peter Rabbit book The Further Tale of Peter Rabbit.

She was first tempted to take up the challenge of writing new Peter Rabbit stories when she received a small box, carefully packaged, containing a small, blue coat, some nibbled radishes and a note from Peter Rabbit himself imploring her write another story about his magical life.

This book was so well received that she was soon asked to write another - and that is where The Christmas Tale of Peter Rabbit comes from.

I hope you enjoy them both (and so does Peter!)
