Christmas Pie Plate Gift Ideas
Christmas Pie Dishes Make Great Christmas Gifts for Cooks
Christmas is such a special time, a time for giving, for refection, for feasting and for celebrating the birth of Christ. It's also a festivity based on a much older celebration that took part in the early winter, and who doesn't need a bit of cheer in the depths of the coldest time of the year?
We love to celebrate Christmas with roasts, pies and cakes and special festive foods. I always make mince pies, a chestnut pie for my vegetarian friends, cranberry and apple pies (I've added a picture of one of my hot winter-warming meat pies complete with pie bird), and they always go down a real treat.
What would I like to find in my Christmas stocking? Well, one of these pie dishes wouldn't go amiss. What better gift to give (and receive - hint hint) this year than a Christmas pie dish?
The Christmas pie plates that I've chosen are all pretty as a picture, merry and bright, but tough and practical too. After all a pie dish is not just for Christmas!

Portmeirion Christmas Story Pie Dish - Spode Christmas Tree-Green Pie Plate
In my youth, and that is going back somewhat now, I was given a Portmeirion mug and plate with a botanical rendering of the Daisy (Bellis Bellis) by my friend Caroline, and I've loved Portmeirion ware ever since. These pie dishes would make a lovely gift, and it's fun to add to your Portmeirion ware collection over the years.
Today Spode is a Stoke-on-Trent based pottery company that was founded by Josiah Spode (1733–1797) in 1770. Josiah Spode earned renown for perfecting under-glaze blue transfer printing in 1783–1784 – a development that led to the launch in 1816 of Spode's Blue Italian range which has remained in production ever since.
Josiah Spode is also often credited with developing a successful formula for fine bone china. Whether this is true or not, his son, Josiah Spode II, was certainly responsible for the successful marketing of English bone china.
The Portmeirion Group now owns Spode so that's why you'll see this pie dish described as Spode.
You can buy super-festive bright red Portmeirion pie birds to go with the dish - a lovely festive touch.

A little Pfaltzgraff history
The company all began with German-born Johann George Pfaltzgraff. In the 1800s, Pfaltzgraff trained as a potter was unable to start his own business there so he and his wife moved to Pennsylvania where George Falsgraff, a relative, had been working as a potter since 1811. Johann set sail in May 1833 landing in Baltimore, Maryland and by 1835he was living in Conewago in York Country, where Falsgraff lived.
In 1839 JPfaltzgraff moved to Freystown then near City of York to establish a pottery, later taken over by Johann's nephew, Henry Miller.

Rowe Pottery for Christmas - Candy canes are so very reminiscent of Christmas
Does anyone actually give candy canes at Christmas? We certainly never received them as Christmas gifts when we were children, but that doesn't mean that they didn't figure largely in our Christmas decorations. Candy cane ornaments took pride of place on our Christmas trees and candy canes featured often on our Christmas greeting cards. I love this understated plate. Have a look at this plate on Amazon.com - the blue and white colouring gives it a very traditional feel, doesn't it?
